Licensed Officials

USAWE Judges

USAWE recognizes four levels of Judge Licensure for Working Equitation competitions in the United States:

  • Learner (L) judges are eligible to officiate over Working Equitation schooling shows.
  • Recorded (r) judges are eligible to officiate over B-Rated competitions, up through Intermediate level classes.
  • Registered (R) judges are eligible to officiate over A-Rated, B-Rated, and Regional Championship competitions at all levels.
  • Senior (S) judges may officiate over all WE competitions at all levels in the United States, with no restrictions.

Event organizers are encouraged to contact the judges directly if they are interested in having them officiate at an event they are hosting.

Honorarium rates will vary, based on the individual judges’ availability and proximity to the event, etc.  To help with planning / budgeting, we recommend that the following minimum honorariums be considered:

  • “L” Judges: $250/judging day
  • “r” Judges:  $350/judging day
  • “R” and “S” Judges: $450/judging day

Organizers should plan to cover travel costs (transportation, lodging, and meals) as well as an honorarium for each judging day.  It is generally better to pay reimbursable expenses (travel costs) separate from honorariums due to tax requirements.

USAWE Technical Delegates

USAWE recognizes two levels of Technical Delegate Licensure for Working Equitation competitions in the United States:

  • Provisional Technical Delegates (P-TDs) are eligible to officiate over B-Rated Working Equitation competitions.
  • Technical Delegates (TDs) are eligible to officiate over B-Rated, A-Rated, Regional and National Championship competitions.

The eventual goal is to have a sufficient number of TDs across the country that events will be able to hire licensed Technical Delegates, as licensed TDs can help ensure that events are conducted fairly for all competitors, and they are a great resource for show managers and Judges. Event organizers are encouraged to contact the Technical Delegates directly if they are interested in having them officiate at an event they are hosting.

Honorarium rates will vary, based on the individual TD’s availability and proximity to the event, etc.  To help with planning / budgeting, we recommend that the following minimum honorariums be considered.

  • Provisional TD:  Ideally, P-TDs will be volunteers. In no cases, however, should they be paid more than $75/day
  • TD: $250/officiating day

Organizers should plan to cover travel costs (transportation, lodging, and meals) as well as an honorarium for each day spent officiating at an event.  It is generally better to pay reimbursable expenses (travel costs) separate from honorariums due to tax requirements.

USAWE Logo design by Alexandra Crippen of Crippen Designs.

The logo represents the four trials of Working Equitation and highlights the diversity for which the sport is known in the United States.

  • The first image depicts a mule, being ridden in western tack and attire in the Dressage trial.
  • The second image showcases an Iberian horse in traditional Iberian tack and attire performing in the EOH trial.
  • The third image shows a horse of indeterminate breeding and a rider in English tack and attire, competing in the Speed trial.
  • Together, all three riders represent a team competing together in the Cattle trial. Although the cow is not shown directly, the three teammates are working in concert. The image is intended to elicit the feeling of excitement and movement as the team moves their designated cow toward the holding pen to the far right, off the page. (Think of it as a "silent cow", much as the letter "e" at the end of a word is often referred to as "the silent 'e'" in recognition of its existence without being read aloud).
