April 2024

President’s Letter

By: Doreen Atkinson

Hello, to my friends in Working Equitation!

The month of March flew by. April is here with some rain and lots of wind in Texas. It’s pretty and green and the bluebonnets are plentiful. Days are longer, my workouts are good, and horse shows are happening. We will be having one of our first cattle clinics in Texas in May which I am looking forward.

The interest in working equitation in the U.S. is growing by leaps and bounds. Volunteers are very important to the growth of the sport. I want to thank all show organizers that host and manage shows. There is a need for more managers and places for more shows. Shows can be expensive to run so I see a lot of areas going to schooling shows which are important for riders to get experience without the expense. The strategic planning committee is meeting weekly and is addressing the subject of how to continue to grow USAWE, how to keep up with growth and how to offer more affordable shows.

The Bylaws Task force is working hard on the revision of the bylaws. Please read the bylaws and if you have a change request, there is a form to submit of your request on the website within Corporate > Records.

My focus word this month is truth. Truth is like the rudder on a giant ship, the thing that keeps the ship on track, regardless of how high the waves are, or how strong the winds are.

When I am met with the high winds of concern in this organization, I go to the truth. Why are we here and why do we do this sport? What is the spirit of the sport? And what is best for this organization? Will it help or hurt USAWE? One truth is I am here for you to do my best. I am working for this organization to move forward and grow into a professional sport with quality.

Thank you for your support, your ideas, and for joining our USAWE community.
I hope to see you at a show in the near future. — Doreen
