REGION 6

By: Kim Hillyer

Hello Region 6 members!

Region 6 has a busy show season.  I want to thank these AO’s and their show managers for putting on these licensed shows.  It is hard work, and the volunteers needed to make these shows a success are so important.

If you aren’t ready to show at licensed show just yet, consider volunteering at these shows.  It is a great way to see how it’s done.  The region just had its first 2 licensed shows of the year.  The first was held by ERAHC on June 5 and 6 at Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon, VA, and the other was held by NEWE on June 12 & 13 at the Vermont State Fairgrounds in Rutland, VT.

ERAHC has 2 more shows on the schedule, one in NJ and the other in Lexington, VA.  NEWE has 5 more B-rated licensed shows scheduled with one in Loudon, NH, one in Pine Plains, NY, two more at the Vermont State Fairgrounds in Rutland, VT, and one in Pembrook, NH.  Check out the calendar on the USAWE website for dates!

There are some areas of Region 6 that are in need of USAWE Affiliate Organizations.  If you are thinking about the possibility of starting an Affiliate Organization with USAWE, and have questions, shoot me an email or give me a call and I will help you get started.

Working Equitation of South Central PA continues to spread the word!

Our area is heavily into Western Pleasure, Hunter/Jumpers and Dressage is recognized in the South Central PA through a local organization.

Our goal will be to find ways to entice and encourage all disciplines to dip their “hooves” into the Working Equitation arena.

Last month, Hollyhurst Farm, LLC, Carlisle, PA, sponsored a two day Quality Horsemanship clinic with Mike Feister. These clinics are a great way to “Prepare our Horses” for the Sport of Working Equitation.

In addition, WESCPA members, this past May and early June, 2021 enjoyed working with Mike Feister to learn how to separate designated cows from the herd as well as how to move them through a designated corridor.

Most Working Equitation competitions do not offer the Cattle Trial, but when they do, we hope our PA members will be a force to be reckoned with.

On June 26 & 27, 2021 Hollyhurst Farm, LLC will be sponsoring another Mike Feister Quality Horsemanship Clinic.

Regards,
Kathi Rickert

ERAHC USAWE AO Report 6/13/21

ERAHC’s second USAWE approved WE Show in our four-show series was this past weekend, June 5-6, 2021, at Frying Pan Farm Park in Herdon, VA.

Our judge was Rebecca Algar, an “S” judge from Morriston, FL. Rebecca was a very fair and honest judge with a wealth of knowledge! Thank you, Rebecca.

The show had 26 competitors – 12 Level 1, 7 Level 2, 4 Level 3, 1 Level 4, and 2 Level 5. Frying Pan Farm Park is part of the Fairfax County Park System and is a wonderful facility. Everyone there connected to the park were very kind and helpful!!! Thank you FPFP.

The show ran extremely well. If it were not for the NOVAWE group and all their volunteers, obstacles, decorations, etc., we would not have been able to have the show run so smoothly. Even the cicadas seemed to enjoy joining the fun (ugh!).

Our next show in the series is on July 17-18 at the Horse Park of NJ in Allentown, NJ.  Entries are still open. We will have Susan Watkins, an “R” judge from Riverside, CA, as our judge. This will be our first time having her officiate one of our shows. We look forward to meeting and working with her!

ERAHC is in full show swing! Come visit and/or compete with us.

See you next month!

We completed our first WE clinic May 22-23 with riders riding dressage fix a test and groups for learning about rules and the obstacles. Melissa Gallagher and Kim Hillyer did a great job!

EPAWE riders rode in their first WE schooling show at OSE on July 10, 2021. Alix James and Vee won dressage and EOH and overall champions for the day! Susan Felicia/Teddy and Kim Mackey/Cloud also made their WE debut.

All of us rode at different levels yet had the same outcome: we are hooked on WE! Truly hoping to grow and expand the sport in eastern PA to provide more opportunities and access for others to participate in WE.

There are still openings to ride in our first schooling show July 10, 2021 w Allison Reed. Dressage indoor w obstacles in the outdoor ring at Collective Roots Dressage, Cochranville, PA. Plenty of room for trailer parking! Check out our Facebook page for registration details!

Have a great ride!

Spring arrived in Northern Virginia and moved swiftly into summer to begin the Northern Virginia Working Equation (NOVAWE) show season.  Our first NOVAWE schooling show was held at Frying Pan Farm Park (FPFP) in Herndon, VA, May 22, officiated by Jill Malone and run by NOVAWE volunteers.

Like clockwork, the show progressed through the day and spectators were treated to fabulous rides both in the dressage court and over the Biddie Lowry designed Ease of Hand (EOH) and Speed obstacle courses.

The camaraderie of NOVAWE members and this sport never wanes.  All riders supported each other and undoubtedly all improved their WE skills.  Britt Callahan was Champion L1 Division A on Reason to Smile, followed by Reserve Champion Jeannie Whited on Speight Me.  Joanne Masterson was Champion L1 Division B on Lucy, followed by Reserve Champion Barb Sullivan on Aluinn Wyatt.

A couple of spotted mares took top honors in Novice A (L2).  Laura Guillaudeu and Dot’s Dreamdoll (a black and white Paint) were Champion. Diane Hutchinson and Splash of Glory (a black and white Oldenburg Pinto) finished as Reserve Champion.  Someday these two need to do a pairs class.

For some of the competitors this was their first WE show, and there were a couple of DQs.  However the experience was an excellent prep for the Eastern Region Andalusian Horse Club (ERAHC) rated show that followed two weeks later at the same facility.

Earlier in May, to help prepare NOVAWE members for the show season, NOVAWE ran a Dressage Fix-A-Test with notable dressage trainer Mary Flood of Wildfire Farm in Lovettsville VA.

Many of our show riders took advantage of this schooling/training opportunity to polish their dressage tests.  Wildfire Farm is a NOVAWE business member.

Another NOVAWE business member, Mitchell Dressage Series, conducted a EOH clinic with clinician Allison Reed (of Bella Vita Stables, also a NOVAWE business member).  This clinic was held on the other side of the NOVAWE region in Catlett, VA.

The clinic format was geared to prep riders for showing and included coaching on how to ride in a busy warm-up ring as well as how to prepare your horse with flexions and balance tests during warm-up. After the morning clinic portion, a EOH schooling class, complete with judging and ribbons, was conducted.

Both the EOH clinic and the Dressage Fix-a-Test were excellent sources of information and training for the participants.

NOVAWE transitioned its event registration process to Strider Pro and is enjoying more streamlined registration for its clinics and shows.  If ever needed, contact Biddie Lowry (NOVAWE.blowry@gmail.com) for NOVAWE event registration assistance.

NOVAWE thanks all its business members and show sponsors who support our efforts to bring Working Equitation to Northern Virginia and the surrounding areas.
