The Newest PLATINUM MEDAL Winner is from Region 2
Congratulations to Miguel Undabarrena, of Arizona, on his Platinum Lifetime Achievement Medal. To earn a Platinum Medal, a rider must earn a total of 8 qualifying scores in Masters Level classes. Those scores must include: (4) scores 60% or higher (Dressage/EOH % averaged), (4) scores 65% or higher (Dressage/EOH % averaged) All qualifying scores must be earned when competing under an “R”, “S”, or WAWE judge.
I was lucky enough to get to interview Miguel the other day, and personally congratulate him on this achievement. There are only a total of five riders to have earned a PLATINUM MEDAL to date.
Amy: So, Miguel I remember the first time we met, at the 2010 IALHA National Championship Show, you were part of the first demonstration for Working Equitation. Is that where you started in working equitation?
Miguel: “I’ve been riding in Working Equitation since 2008—so, for over 17 years now. Initially, it was just for fun; I discovered the sport through friends from Mexico who frequently traveled to Europe. My passion for it grew, and I started taking it seriously thanks to my friend, Amy Star, who encouraged me to compete. I’m grateful to her for that push!”
Amy: Could you tell me about some of your *Top-Level Horses:*
Miguel: “I’ve had the privilege to ride some incredible horses at the top levels of WE, including Miguel al Vida, Baquimo, Cobre, Imperio do Castanheiro, Dourus, Quatrilho, Baixanel, Urante, Gunipre, Altivo Mabu, Zico, and Sherep. Each one brought something unique to the table, and I’ve learned so much from them all.”
Amy: Which of those was your favorite and why?
Miguel: “Sherep, a blood bay stallion, has always been my favorite. He had an incredible heart; he would go through fire for me, no matter the circumstances. What makes him even more special is that he passed on his talents to his offspring, which is something I’m deeply proud of.”
Amy: What have been some of your favorite competitions:
Miguel: “Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the pleasure of competing in some amazing events. In the USA, the Andalusian World Cup in Las Vegas and the Haras Cup in Magnolia stand out—both made me feel like I was part of a true team, especially with the group from Arizona. The shows I organized at Cuadra San Benito were very special, too. And I always look forward to the events at Campeon Farms; the venue is simply breathtaking. Internationally, competing in Brazil alongside my team mates Amy Star and Summer Star was an unforgettable experience. But the most exciting and meaningful competition for me was the World Championships in France. The WAWE World Championship in Les Herbiers, had an energy, level of competition and a camaraderie that made it an experience I’ll never forget.”
Amy: What are your future goals?
Miguel: “Looking ahead, my goal is to be part of the US team for the World Championships in 2026. I’m optimistic and working hard to make it happen. I know many other riders are vying for a spot, and I wish them all the best. I hope the US can field a strong team that shows the international community how seriously we take this sport.”
Amy: What advice do you have for aspiring WE riders:
Miguel: “My advice to aspiring WE riders? First and foremost, build a strong relationship with your horse. This is the foundation of success in Working Equitation. Secondly, invest in a professional coach—they can accelerate your progress immensely. And lastly, I know I might look a bit grumpy at times, but please don’t hesitate to come up and talk to me. I’m always happy to share advice in person!”
